The Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has officially announced the 2027 undergraduate application cycle. Prospective students are encouraged to visit the official application portal and submit their applications once the portal opens.

WSU Undergraduate Qualifications

WSU Minimum Entry Requirements
To gain admission into an undergraduate programme at WSU, applicants must meet the minimum academic requirements below.
Higher Certificate
Applicants must:
- Hold a National Senior Certificate (NSC).
- Achieve at least 30% in the language of instruction.
- Meet any programme-specific subject or mark requirements.
Diploma
Applicants must:
- Hold a National Senior Certificate (NSC).
- Achieve at least 30% in the language of instruction.
- Obtain an achievement rating of 3 (40โ49%) or higher in four recognised 20-credit subjects, excluding Life Orientation.
- Meet any additional programme-specific subject requirements.
Bachelorโs Degree
Applicants must:
- Hold a National Senior Certificate (NSC).
- Achieve at least 30% in the language of instruction.
- Obtain an achievement rating of 4 (50โ59%) or higher in four recognised 20-credit subjects, excluding Life Orientation.
- Meet any programme-specific subject requirements.
Requirements for International Students
International applicants are also welcome to apply to WSU.
- Applications are assessed according to Higher Education South Africa (HESA) guidelines.
- Some qualifications may require verification through the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
- WSUโs International Office assists applicants with the evaluation process.
Mature-Age Applicants
Applicants who do not meet standard admission requirements may still be considered under the Mature Age Endorsement policy (Rule 1.13 in the General Prospectus).
Important Admission Notes

- Diploma programmes require an NSC with a Diploma endorsement.
- Degree programmes require an NSC with a Bachelorโs endorsement.
- Students holding an old Senior Certificate or NC(V) qualification should check specific programme requirements.
Admission Point Score (APS)
WSU uses the Admission Point Score (APS) system to assess academic performance.
Key points about APS:
- Calculated from the best six subjects (or seven subjects for the Faculty of Education).
- Includes:
- English
- One additional language
- Four highest-scoring subjects
- Life Orientation is only included for applicants to the Faculty of Education.
