We are now in the application season, with students competing for limited spaces and UKZN filtering for qualified candidates. One important requirement that remains is the application/processing fee for the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

In this article, we will explain and break down the 2027 application fees associated with applying for either undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

Who Can Apply and Key Deadline

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has launched its online application portal, welcoming students from across South Africa and around the world. The portal is scheduled to close on 30 September 2026. UKZN has never offered free applications, so applicants are expected to have the application fee ready before beginning the process.

Applications are accepted from:

  • New applicants

  • Previous applicants

  • Transfer students

  • International students

  • Any student seeking to change their programme

UKZN 2027 Application Fees: What You Need to Know

All applicants, except first-time domestic students who must apply through the Central Application Office (CAO), are required to submit their applications and pay the applicable fees directly to UKZN.

Application fees for South African returning and transfer applicants:

  • R210 – On-time applications

  • R420 – Late applications

International Students

All international applicants are required to pay a non-refundable processing fee when submitting their application. The fee varies depending on the applicant’s country of origin:

  • Students from SADC and other African countries: R490

  • Students from outside Africa: $153

This fee must be paid, and proof of payment must be submitted together with your application documents.

South African First-Time Applicants

All first-time applicants from South Africa must visit the Central Application Office (CAO) online portal to check the 2027 application fees. Payment must be made directly to the CAO and not to UKZN.

Closing Dates

Applicants planning to study at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) must submit proof of payment of the application fee by 30 September 2026. Applications will not be processed until the proof of payment has been received.
