Eligibility for NSFAS Monthly Allowance:

Qualification criteria

You qualify for the NSFAS monthly allowances if you meet the requirements below for 2024

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

You do not qualify for NSFAS monthly allowance if

  • You have completed a previous qualification.
  • Your combined household income is more than R350 000 per annum threshold
  • You are in a private university or Tvet college
  • You are pursuing short learning courses
  • You do not have an email and a phone number

How much is the NSFAS allowance for 2026 per month?

Below are the NSFAS 2026 allowances that will be disbursed monthly to all qualified and approved NSFAS students

Student of a University

  • Accommodation: As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R625.00 per month
  • Living allowance of R1,250 Monthly
  • Book allowances R433.33 Monthly
  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R241.67 Monthly for students in catered residences

Student of a TVET College

  • TVET Accommodation in an urban area R2,000 per Month
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area R1,575 per Month
  • Accommodation in a rural area R1,312.5 per Month
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R612.5 per Month
  • Transport R583.3 per Month
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R24167 per Month

How to Apply for NSFAS Monthly allowances 

Go through the following procedure to submit your application forms for NSFAS monthly allowances

  • Visit the NSFAS application portal, www.nsfas.org.za, online form to apply for NSFAS 2026
  • Select and click on the’myNSFAS’ tab.
  • Create a myNSFAS account. Go HERE if you don’t know how to create the account.
  • Choose the ‘APPLY’ tab.
  • Make any necessary changes to your personal information.
  • Complete the rest of the required fields on the screen.
  • Upload any supporting documents that are required as aforementioned.
  • Finally, you can click the “submit” button to deliver your NSFAS online applications.

Documents Required For NSFAS Monthly Allowances

You need to have these documents to apply for NSFAS Monthly allowances for the 2026 academic year

  • A copy of student ID / Birth certificate
  • A Copy of the parent/s or guardian/spouse’s ID
  • A two-sided Smart card
  • Proof of income (where applicable)
  • Disability Annexure A form
  • completed Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker
  • An applicant who has indicated that s/he has no family member details and or abridged birth certificate must complete the Declaration: Non-SASSA.
