North-West University (NWU) has announced that applications for the 2027 academic year will open on 1 June 2026 and close on 31 August 2026. All qualified prospective students are encouraged to submit their applications from 1 June once the application window officially opens.

Eligibility to Apply to NWU
Students from South Africa and other countries who wish to study for undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications are invited to apply to North-West University (NWU) for the 2027 academic year. Admission is competitive, and only candidates who meet the programme and faculty admission criteria will be selected.
NWU Application Fee for 2027
Applicants who are South African citizens do not need to pay an application fee when applying to North-West University (NWU) for the 2027 academic year. The online application is completely free for local students.
However, international applicants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of R600. This payment must be completed before the application closing date, and proof of payment must be submitted to the university as part of the application process. Only applications with the required proof of payment will be considered.
Minimum Requirements
To study a higher certificate, diploma, or bachelor degree at North-West University, you need to meet the minimum requirements below:
Higher Certificate: The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council. Institutional and programme needs may require additional combinations or recognised NSC subjects and levels of achievement.
Diploma: The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council, coupled with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40% – 49%) or better in four (4) recognised 20-credit subjects. Institutional and programme needs may require additional combinations of recognised NSC subjects and levels of achievement.
Bachelor’s Degree: The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council, coupled with an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50%–59%) or better in four (4) recognised 20-credit subjects. Institutional and programme needs may require additional combinations of recognised NSC subjects and levels of achievement.

Application Materials Required For 2027
Prospective applicants wishing to study at North-West University must possess the following documents:
- A mobile phone and an active email address are required
- Grade 12 results; grade 11 results (final results only); or a copy of your matriculation certificate, if you have already passed matriculation.
- Applicants who are currently upgrading their grade 12 results will only be considered after the improved results are presented to the NWU.
- Applicants who follow the Cambridge, GED, or any other non-NSC curriculum or who may qualify for exemption based on advanced age or post-school qualifications must provide an exemption certificate as issued by the USAF.
- A copy of your ID
- Copy of your academic record (if applicable).
- A copy of your passport if you are a citizen of South Africa

- A certified copy of your SA ID document (or your passport if you are an international student).
- Certified copies of academic transcripts of all qualifications obtained from other tertiary education institutions.
