Applications for the 2026 academic year at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) are now open! Whether you’re applying for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, it’s important to know the key dates, application requirements, and submission process. This guide covers everything you need to ensure your application is submitted correctly and on time.
UKZN Admissions Open for 2026
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) will begin accepting applications on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, for the 2026 academic year. Some programs have earlier deadlines, but the main application period ends on September 30, 2025. Consider the dates and any late application possibilities!
Who Can Apply Online for 2026 Admissions?
- South African first-time undergraduate applicants applying to UKZN must apply via CAO at www.cao.ac.za.
- Applicants who are currently registered (or have been registered) at another institution

International Applicants
For international applicants, the following information must be taken into consideration:
- On the UKZN Application for Admission to Undergraduate Programs (International) form, applicants for full-time undergraduate studies must apply directly to UKZN.
- UKZN charges a non-refundable application fee. On submission of their application, applicants must include proof of payment as well as all documentation asked.
- Application and proof of payment must reach the university before or on the date of closing for 2024/2025 admissions.
Registration Fee
Prospective international applicants must be ready to pay these non-refundable applications and submit the proof during the application submission

N.B.: Late applications are not considered for internal applicants for 2026 admissions.
UKNZ Admission Criteria:
Prospective undergraduate applicants for any of the degree or diploma courses or Programmes must at least possess the following qualifications:
Undergraduate Applicants: Local
Degree: Applicants to undergraduate degree programmes must be in possession of a National Senior Certificate for Degree Studies (NSC-Deg) or a Senior Certificate with endorsement.
Diploma: Applicants to undergraduate diploma programmes must be in possession of a National Senior Certificate for Diploma studies (NSC-Dip) or Senior Certificate.
International Applicants: International applicants are subject to a selection procedure based on academic merit and the number of spaces available. Applicants with non-South African school leaving certificates must contact the South African Matriculation Board directly to determine if they qualify for admission to degree studies in South Africa.
