Applications for the 2026 academic year are now open at the University of KwaZulu-Natal for students interested in pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate programmes. Starting from April 1, 2025, the university is accepting applications for admission to the 2026 academic year. Applicants may submit their applications either electronically or via hard copy, as the official admission window is now active. Be sure to submit your application before the deadline for consideration.

How to Apply at UKNZ For 2026 Admissions

KwaZulu-Natal University offers two application formats. Candidates may apply online or in person for the 2026 academic year. The management of the university has authorized each of these approaches.

Online Application: This is where an applicant applies via the admission portal set up by the university by following the steps outlined in this article. This is the fastest approach to applying for admission. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Manual Application: This process/method involves an applicant downloading the application form, filling it with ink, and submitting it either by email or hand delivery to the admission office. This approach is usually slow in reaching the management for review.

When to Apply for Admissions at UKZN

The application window for the 2026 academic year begins on April 1 and closes on September 30, 2025. Some programmes have application deadlines earlier than September. Click here to discover more about the closing dates. Some offered courses for 2026 admissions accept late applications.

Who to Apply Online for 2026 Admissions

  • South African first-time undergraduate applicants applying to UKZN must apply via CAO at www.cao.ac.za.
  • Applicants who are currently registered (or have been registered) at another institution

Hard Copy Application

N.B. Manual applications (hard copy) will not be accepted, and they will not be processed, with the following exceptions:
  • NDP Programmes
  • Change of campuses
  • 2026 second semester applications that close on the 30th of June 2026

Does it Cost to Apply at UKNZ University (Local)?

Prospective South African applicants who are interested in applying for admission at the University of Kwazulu-Natal should prepare a non-refundable amount as stated below:

  • Where applicable, R210 on-time applications and R420 late applications are permitted.
  • You will not be needed to pay an application fee if you are a current student who was enrolled in the previous academic year.

International Applicants

For international applicants, the following information must be taken into consideration:

  • On the UKZN Application for Admission to Undergraduate Programs (International) form, applicants for full-time undergraduate studies must apply directly to UKZN.
  • UKZN charges a non-refundable application fee. On submission of their application, applicants must include proof of payment as well as all documentation asked.
  • Application and proof of payment must reach the university before or on the date of closing for 2026 admissions.

Application Fees payable by International Applicants

Prospective international applicants must be ready to pay these non-refundable applications and submit the proof during the application submission

N.B.: Late applications are not considered for internal applicants for 2026 admissions.

UKNZ Admission Requirements

Prospective undergraduate applicants for any of the degree or diploma courses or Programmes must at least possess the following qualifications:

Undergraduate Applicants: Local

Degree: Applicants to undergraduate degree programmes must be in possession of a National Senior Certificate for Degree Studies (NSC-Deg) or a Senior Certificate with endorsement.

Diploma: Applicants to undergraduate diploma programmes must be in possession of a National Senior Certificate for Diploma Studies (NSC-Dip) or Senior Certificate.

International applicants: International applicants are subject to a selection procedure based on academic merit and the number of spaces available. Applicants with non-South African school leaving certificates must contact the South African Matriculation Board directly to determine if they qualify for admission to degree studies in South Africa.
