Each year, many talented but financially disadvantaged students struggle to pursue higher education due to insufficient funds for tuition, books, and living expenses. The South African government supports these students through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). This initiative aims to help undergraduate applicants cover their tertiary education costs and achieve their academic goals, ensuring that financial limitations do not hinder their educational opportunities.

NSFAS Application Period for 2026 Academic Year
The NSFAS online application portal will be open from September 1, 2025, to January 27, 2026. Applicants must submit all required documents by this deadline to be considered for financial support for the 2026 academic year. Late applications submitted after this date may not be eligible for funding.

NSFAS Benefits and Coverage For 2026
Once a student’s application is approved by NSFAS, they stand to gain the following benefits:
UNIVERSITY
| Items | Cost/Benefits |
| Accommodation | As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence), |
| Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) | R7 500 per annum |
| Living allowance | R15, 000 per annum |
| Book allowances | R5200 per annum |
| Incidental/personal care allowance | R2900 per annum for students in catered residences |
TVETs COLLEGES
| Items | Cost/Benefits |
| Accommodation in an urban area | R24,000 per annum |
| Accommodation in a peri-urban area | R18,900 per annum |
| Accommodation in a rural area | R15,750 per annum |
| Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) | R7,350 per annum |
| Transport | R7000 per annum |
| Incidental/personal care allowance | R2900 per annum |
