The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) will receive applications for undergraduate degrees, including Higher Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, and Bachelor’s degrees, as well as postgraduate degrees, including master’s and doctoral degrees, for the 2026 academic year throughout the application period
When to Apply at UKZN for 2026
It is best to apply by the dates indicated below to guarantee a spot in the program of your choice.
Opening Date
- All available courses: April 1, 2025
Closing Dates
- Medicine-related courses: June 30, 2025
- All Other Courses: September 30, 2025
Late Applications: Late applications will be considered based on space availability.
UKZN Application Fees for 2026
When applying to UKZN, a non-refundable application fee must be paid at the time of submission. Here are the details:
- On-time Application Fee: R210
- Late Application Fee: R420
- Exemptions: Current UKZN students who enrolled in the previous year are exempt from the application fee.
Note: Use your student number as the reference when making the payment. The payment will reflect on the system after 24-48 hours of payment.
How to Apply for UKZN 2026
UKZN requires all undergraduate applicants to complete their applications online through the CAO portal by following the steps below
- Step 1: Apply via the Central Applications Office (CAO)
- Step 2: Contact the CAO Office
- Step 3: Receive the Package from the CAO Office
- Step 4: Receive Registration Information
- Step 5: Complete the Application Form and Payment
- Step 6: Track Your Application Status

Submit Supporting Documents
Ensure that you submit all the required documents with your application to avoid any delays.
- Certified Copy of ID/Passport
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent (Matric certificate or O/A Levels)
- Proof of University Admission Eligibility (for international applicants)
- English Proficiency (for non-native speakers)
- SAQA Evaluation (for foreign qualifications)
- Research Proposal (for postgraduate applicants)
- Valid Study Visa (for international applicants)
Manual Applications: Exceptions
While UKZN encourages all applicants to apply online, manual applications will be accepted in the following cases:
NDP Programs
- Internal Transfers (Undergraduate & Postgraduate)
- Second Semester Applications (closing June 30, 2025)
In these cases, completed forms must be emailed to enquiries@ukzn.ac.za.
Admission Requirements for UKZN 2026
To get entry into UKZN, you must meet the following criteria:
- Undergraduate Degree Programs: National Senior Certificate for Degree Studies (NSC-Deg) or equivalent.
- Undergraduate Diploma Programs: National Senior Certificate for Diploma Studies (NSC-Dip) or equivalent.
- Postgraduate Applicants: Additional criteria apply, including submission of a relevant research proposal or thesis for Master’s and PhD programs.
Late Applications for UKZN
Only if there is still room in particular courses after the official deadline (September 30, 2025) will late applications be taken into consideration.
UKZN First-Year Registration
Once accepted, you may need to complete the acceptance form before registering for your courses. Visit the registration portal to find out more about the registration deadline, costs, and required documents.
