The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has officially opened its 2027 application window, inviting new students to apply for its wide range of academic programs. Whether you’re planning to study at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, the application process can feel challenging. When Can You Start Your Application for 2027?

You can start applying for any qualification at UJ for 2027 from Wednesday, April 1, 2026. Make sure you meet all the entry requirements before applying, as priority will be given to applicants with strong grades.

UJ 2027 Application Cut-off Date

The 2027 application window closes on 31 October 2026 at 12:00. Please note that closing dates for postgraduate and non-subsidized programs may vary. For detailed information on these programmes and their specific deadlines, visit the UJ website.

Who Can Apply to UJ

  • A new or returning applicant

  • An international student

  • Someone without a UJ student number

  • A domestic learner in Grade 11 or Grade 12

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO APPLYING AT UJ

STEP 1: Check Admission Requirements (APS)

What is APS?
APS (Admission Point Score) is calculated using:

  • Your 6 best subjects

  • Excluding Life Orientation (LO)

  • Including the required subjects for your chosen programme

APS is based on your achievement levels in:

  • NSC (National Senior Certificate)

  • IEB (Independent Examinations Board)

Make sure your APS meets the minimum requirement for your qualification.

STEP 2: Know Which Results to Use

If you are in Grade 12:

  • Apply using final Grade 11 results

  • UJ does NOT consider Grade 12 mid-year results

  • Final decision is made after Grade 12 final results (released in January)

If you already completed Grade 12:

  • Apply using final Grade 12 results

  • Final selection happens in January

  • Ranking is based on APS and space availability

If you are upgrading Grade 12:

  • Tick the box during application indicating you are upgrading

If you are transferring from another university:

  • You must meet minimum Grade 12 requirements

  • Declare ALL previous studies (even incomplete ones)

  • Submit your academic transcript

  • Declare studies even if:

    • You changed fields

    • You cancelled studies

    • You want to transfer credits

STEP 3: Choose Your Study Options Carefully

You may apply for:

  • 2 undergraduate programmes

  • 2 postgraduate programmes

Once submitted:

  • You cannot change or add study choices

STEP 4: Apply Online

  • Applications are FREE

  • Apply online via the UJ website

After submitting:

  • You immediately receive email confirmation

  • You receive your student number

  • Processing takes 15 working days

  • You can track your status online via β€œCheck Your Status.”

STEP 5: Submit Supporting Documents

Undergraduate South African applicants (no previous studies):

  • No documents required

Undergraduate South African transfer students:

  • Submit academic transcript

Undergraduate international applicants:

  • Certified passport

  • School leaving results

  • Academic transcript (if applicable)

Postgraduate South African applicants:

  • Academic transcript

Postgraduate international applicants:

  • Certified passport

  • Academic transcript

File requirements:

  • Maximum size: 512 KB

  • Formats: pdf, jpg, png, tiff, gif

  • Attach each document separately

STEP 6: Wait for Feedback

  • Acknowledgement email: Immediate

  • Processing time: 15 working days

  • Final selection for most programmes happens in January

You must have one of the following before arriving in South Africa:

  • Study visa

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
