Admission Requirements for Universities in South Africa, 2025-2026
Dreaming of studying in South Africa? With its vibrant campuses, diverse student body, and world-class education, it’s no wonder! But before you pack your bags, let’s delve into the admission requirements for universities in South Africa for the 2025–2026 academic year.
While the official requirements won’t be available until May or June 2024, we can still explore the current landscape and equip you with knowledge for your future applications.
General Admission Requirements
The academic requirements will vary depending on the level of education you wish to pursue in South Africa.
Bachelor Degree
The minimum admission requirement for the bachelor’s degree is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with an achievement rating of 4 (adequate achievement, 50–59%) or better in four subjects. You can apply to a university with poor Grade 11 marks if you have good Grade 12 marks. Universities primarily consider your final Grade 12 results for admission.
A certificate of exemption from the matriculation endorsement is required, as issued by the Matriculation Board on behalf of HESA, or a conditional admission certificate issued by a university of technology. Universities accept both Grade 11 and Grade 12 results. You will need to meet the minimum requirements to study.
Master Degree
The minimum admission requirement for the Master’s degree is a bachelor’s degree or honors degree in the relevant field along with great academic achievements.
Doctorate Degree
The minimum admission requirement for the doctorate degree is a master’s degree or a corresponding degree from a professional institution.
