How to Apply for Postgraduate Programmes

Prospective applicants who are interested in applying for postgraduate programmes must go through the following process:

Step 1: Know your Department For Course Requirements

  • Visit the department or faculty website or email the relevant postgraduate office or administrator within your department. Before you start, check that you have the required qualifications.

Step 2: Get Funding if Possible

  • Postgraduate funding applications are not considered unless you have already applied for the degree you’re
    interested in.
  • If an applicant is seeking a scholarship, he or she must start the application as early as possible because the scholarship deadlines are mostly a month before the semester starts.

Step 3: Begin and Submit the Online Application

  • Visit applyonline.uct.ac.za to begin your application

Step 4: Confirm and Acknowledge

  • Applicants must get prompt acknowledgement of their application. The applicant will get a formal acknowledgement of their application within three working days, along with their application number and login information for PeopleSoft, UCT’s online student self-service system. To check the status of your application, log into PeopleSoft.

Step 5: Track your Status

  • Consideration of an application may take up to a couple of months or more. Applicants may be asked to submit further information and/or documentation. Communication about the application will reach an applicant by email at the UCT email address assigned to him or her at the time of the first application.

Step 6: Begin your Registration

  • Registration takes place at the start of the academic year; for certain research-only postgraduate degrees, students may register later. The process and dates for your programme registration will be sent at the time of acceptance or admission, but applicants must check for updates on faculty or programme websites.
