Applications are now being accepted for the 2026 academic year at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). You must be aware of the important dates and application requirements if you want your undergraduate or graduate application to be considered. Important Information for Applying

To apply to UKZN, you must at least meet the basic requirement and submit all documents before or on the application deadline

Step 1: Selection Criteria

• You must meet the minimum and the faculty requirements of the selected course.
• Apply for two study courses on the same form
• Submit only one application form for 2026
• Submit a completed form

Step 2. Things Required During Application

• Grade 12 certificate
• ID/passport
• Proof of application fee payment

Step 3. Non-refundable Handling Fee

• Application submitted before or on 30 September: R250
• Application submitted after 31 October: R470

Step 4. Payment Methods

• Online: Follow the on-screen instructions to pay online.
• Offline: Pay at the EasyPay outlet with your CAO number.

How to Apply Online for UKZN Admission

Follow the guidelines below to apply to UKZN

• Visit www.cao.ac.za
• Select and click on the 2026 application link
• Enter your details to create your CAO profile.
• Select “UKZN” as your preferred institution.
• Choose your field of study (qualifications).
• Complete the application form, providing all the required information.
• Upload any necessary documents, such as academic transcripts.
• Pay the application fee.
• Submit your application before the deadline.
• Once everything is complete, submit your application.
• Upon submission, you will receive a confirmation email containing your student number (EMPLID).

UKZN Admissions Open for 2026

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) will begin accepting applications on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, for the 2026 academic year. Some programs have earlier deadlines, but the main application period ends on September 30, 2025. Consider the dates and any late application possibilities!

Who Can Apply Online for 2026 Admissions?

• South African first-time undergraduate applicants applying to UKZN must apply via CAO at www.cao.ac.za.
• Applicants who are currently registered (or have been registered) at another institution

International Applicants

For international applicants, the following information must be taken into consideration:

• On the UKZN Application for Admission to Undergraduate Programs (International) form, applicants for full-time undergraduate studies must apply directly to UKZN.
• UKZN charges a non-refundable application fee. On submission of their application, applicants must include proof of payment as well as all documentation asked.
• Application and proof of payment must reach the university before or on the date of closing for 2024/2025 admissions.

Registration Fee 

Prospective international applicants must be ready to pay these non-refundable applications and submit the proof during the application submission

• International SADC and rest of Africa R490

N.B.: Late applications are not considered for internal applicants for 2026 admissions.

UKNZ Admission Criteria:

Prospective undergraduate applicants for any of the degree or diploma courses or Programmes must at least possess the following qualifications:

Undergraduate Applicants: Local

Degree: Applicants to undergraduate degree programmes must be in possession of a National Senior Certificate for Degree Studies (NSC-Deg) or a Senior Certificate with endorsement.

Diploma: Applicants to undergraduate diploma programmes must be in possession of a National Senior Certificate for Diploma studies (NSC-Dip) or Senior Certificate.

International Applicants: International applicants are subject to a selection procedure based on academic merit and the number of spaces available. Applicants with non-South African school leaving certificates must contact the South African Matriculation Board directly to determine if they qualify for admission to degree studies in South Africa.
