Breakdown of 2026 NSFAS Allowances

Once you are approved for NSFAS funding, you will be given a variety of allowances to cover the following educational expenses:

Necessities Allowance: This allowance is provided to all NSFAS-funded students to cover the costs associated with attending university, including textbooks and required materials, transport, and food. The amount of this allowance is calculated based on the student’s family income.

Accommodation Allowance: This allowance is designed to cover the costs associated with finding and maintaining accommodation while attending university. The amount of this allowance is determined by NSFAS, based on the student’s needs and the cost of living in their area.

Living Allowance: This allowance is designed to cover the costs associated with daily living expenses, such as electricity and water bills, phone bills, clothing, and other personal items. This allowance is determined by NSFAS based on the student’s family income.

Tuition Fees: Tuition fees are covered by NSFAS for up to a maximum of 8 semesters. The amount covered depends on the student’s qualifications.

How Much Does NSFAS Give For Allowances?

A student already enrolled or about to be enrolled at a public university will be given these amounts to cover the various expenditures approved by NSFAS. Any expenditure outside of these are self-financed by the students

• Allowances for Accommodation As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence) (NSFAS Rent Allowance)
• Transportation allowances (up to 40 km from the institution) of R7 500  per year
• Living allowance of R15, 000 per year
• Learning Materials allowances of R5200 per year
• Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per year for students in catered residences

A student already enrolled or about to be enrolled at an APPROVED AND ACCREDITED TVET COLLEGE will be given these amounts to cover the various expenditures approved by NSFAS. Any expenditure outside of these are self-financed by the students

• Allowances for Accommodation in an urban area amounting to R24,000 per annum
• Allowances for Accommodation in a peri-urban area  amounting to R18,900 per annum
• Allowances for Accommodation in a rural area  amounting to R15,750 per annum
• Allowances for Transport (up to 40 km from the institution)  amounting to R7,350  per annum
• Allowances for Transport  amounting to R7000 per annum
• Allowances for Incidental/personal care amounting to R2900 per annum
