Understanding the NSFAS Eligibility Criteria For 2026

To qualify for NSFAS funding, applicants must meet certain eligibility criteria. While the specifics may vary slightly from year to year, the general criteria include the following:

  • South African Citizenship: Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents.
  • Financial Need: Combined gross household income should not exceed R350 000 per annum

How to Complete NSFAS 2026 Application Form

Once you have accessed the application portal, you will need to complete the application form accurately and thoroughly by following the steps below:

  • Click on register
  • Type in your ID number as it appears on your ID document.
  • Enter your name and surname as they appear on your ID Document.
  • Enter your email address and cellphone number. Your username will be your email address.
  • set up and Create a password and confirm your password.
  • Upload a copy of your ID.
  • Click on register.
  • After clicking register, a One Time Pin (OTP) will be sent to the email address and cellphone number you provided.
  • Check your cell phone and email for the OTP.
  • Enter the OTP in the tab provided and click submit.
    • You will then receive another SMS and email confirming that your myNSFAS account has been created.
    • You may now continue with your application by Clicking on the ‘APPLY’ tab and completing the sections on the screen
  • Submit by uploading all required supporting documents as shown below:
    • A copy of student ID / Birth certificate
    • A Copy of the parent/s or guardian/spouse’s ID
    • A two-sided Smart card
    • Proof of income (where applicable)
    • Disability Annexure A form
    • completed Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker
    • An applicant who has indicated that s/he has no family member details and/or abridged birth certificate must complete the Declaration: Non-SASSA

NSFAS Management has announced that qualified applicants can now apply for financial support (loan and bursary) for the 2026 academic year. This application window is open for a limited time, so applicants are encouraged to submit their applications promptly to avoid missing out on potential funding.

To support applicants, comprehensive assistance is provided, covering the entire NSFAS application process, application dates, required documents, and other relevant admission topics.

NSFAS Application Open and Closing Dates for 2026

The NSFAS application for the 2026 academic year officially opened on September 1, 2025. Prospective students are encouraged to apply as early as possible to ensure their applications are considered.

The deadline for all NSFAS submissions is January 31, 2026. Applications submitted after this date will be rejected. However, students who withdraw their applications may resubmit, provided it is done before the closing date

Who is eligible for funding?

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

step 1: Login Information

  • Get access to the internet
  • Enter www.nsfas.org.za and locate the myNSFAS button
  • Click on this tab to open the application page for you to begin

Step 2: myNSFAS Account

  • Applicants are to create an account in order to access the myNSFAS portal. Click Here to Create your Account

Step 3: Apply Now

  • Complete the sections on the screen by clicking on the Apply Tab

Step 4: Required Documents and submit an application

  • Upload required supporting documents where applicable and click on ‘Submit.’
    • Copy of your ID or birth certificate
    • ID copies of parents, guardians or spouse of an Applicant
    • An Applicant must provide proof of income or 1 year’s IRP5 (if applicable)
    • Applicant’s parents, guardian or spouse’s proof of income
    • If an applicant is a SASSA grant recipient, no proof of income will be required
    • An applicant with a disability must submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form, the form is accessible online.
    • An applicant who is recognized as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form.
