Eligibility Criteria for NSFAS Funding in 2026

To qualify for NSFAS funding for the 2026 academic intake, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Must be a South African citizen.
All beneficiaries of SASSA grants are eligible for funding.
Household combined annual income should not exceed R350,000.
For students with disabilities, the household combined income must not exceed R600,000.
Students who started their studies before 2018 and have an annual household income below R122,000 are also eligible.

This application window is open for a limited time, so applicants are encouraged to submit their applications promptly to avoid missing out on potential funding.

NSFAS Application Open and Closing Dates for 2026

The NSFAS application for the 2026 academic year officially opened on September 1, 2025. Prospective students are encouraged to apply as early as possible to ensure their applications are considered.

The deadline for all NSFAS submissions is January 31, 2026. Applications submitted after this date will be rejected. However, students who withdraw their applications may resubmit, provided it is done before the closing date

Who is eligible for funding?

All South African citizens

Step 4: Required Documents and submit an application

Upload required supporting documents where applicable and click on ‘Submit.’
- Copy of your ID or birth certificate
- ID copies of parents, guardians or spouse of an Applicant
- An Applicant must provide proof of income or 1 year’s IRP5 (if applicable)
- Applicant’s parents, guardian or spouse’s proof of income
- If an applicant is a SASSA grant recipient, no proof of income will be required
- An applicant with a disability must submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form, the form is accessible online.
- An applicant who is recognized as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form.
