Academic requirements for the NSFAS bursary

To receive NSFAS funding to study at a TVET college, you must have completed Grades 9 to 12, and Grade 12 to study at a university or TVET college. If you are approved for NSFAS funding, you must first meet the academic admission requirements of the university or TVET college before NSFAS will provide you with any funds.

  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500  per annum

  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

Tvet College Applicants

  • Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 on an annual basis
  • Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution): R7,350  every year
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance: R2900 yearly

Eligibility Criteria for NSFAS Funding in 2026

To qualify for NSFAS funding for the 2026 academic intake, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • All beneficiaries of SASSA grants are eligible for funding.
  • Household combined annual income should not exceed R350,000.
  • For students with disabilities, the household combined income must not exceed R600,000.

NSFAS Application Open and Closing Dates for 2026

The NSFAS application for the 2026 academic year officially opened on September 1, 2025. Prospective students are encouraged to apply as early as possible to ensure their applications are considered.

The deadline for all NSFAS submissions is January 31, 2026. Applications submitted after this date will be rejected. However, students who withdraw their applications may resubmit, provided it is done before the closing date

Who is eligible for funding?

  • Upload required supporting documents where applicable and click on ‘Submit.’
    • Copy of your ID or birth certificate
    • ID copies of parents, guardians or spouse of an Applicant
    • An Applicant must provide proof of income or 1 year’s IRP5 (if applicable)
    • Applicant’s parents, guardian or spouse’s proof of income
    • If an applicant is a SASSA grant recipient, no proof of income will be required
    • An applicant with a disability must submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form, the form is accessible online.
    • An applicant who is recognized as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form.
